August 2010
Congratulations to MAAB Taekwondo Instructor Brice Cady (also owner of Brice's Master Clean) for being the recipient of the Big Sky State Games Volunteer of the Year award for 2010. The State Games committee chooses one volunteer each year who goes above and beyond the call of duty and we (Mrs. Allen and I) are very proud they chose Mr. Cady. He picks up the MTA trailer which holds mats and computers (never takes a penny for gasoline), provides extra commercial fans for the venues (to circulate the air), disinfects the competition areas, is almost always the first to arrive for set up and the last to leave after cleanup. He is always available to help with anything the school needs and always has a smile on his face.
He will also resume the TKD sparring classes on Fridays nights in September and we will let you know the dates.
Don't forget to vote for the Martial Arts Academy of Billings and Brice's Master Clean in the upcoming Billings Gazette Readers Choice Awards for 2010.
July 2010
Instructors at MAAB have been participating in some additional volunteer
activities in the community.
In February, Dave and Eve Allen and Brice Cady participated in the Self
Defense Section for Laurel Middle School’s Teen Awareness Program. In the
past, Sherry Moore has also been involved in this program. The kids
learned about personal space, awareness, trusting instincts, voice control
and some simple techniques for physical contact.
This spring, Dave Allen and Master Curtis Ferrin came back to the children's
unit of the Billings Clinic Psych Center to talk about choices, a positive
mind-set, and the importance of physical exercise. They practiced some
martial arts techniques and what it would mean to be a martial artist and a
good person. This is the third year that these instructors have been
invited to come to the psych center.
Our beloved Grand Master Fujiwara passed away in June. Sally McIntosh, the
director of the summer kid’s art program held at Rocky Mountain College,
had always incorporated martial arts in her program with GM Fujiwara.
Jeremiah Thompson stepped up to the challenge. In addition to all of the
other artistic activities, they were introduced to the martial “arts.” The
kids had a great time and were even getting proficient at wielding
nunchuckas. This was a week-long program, and Ed Thompson assisted on the
last day.
The Billings Public Library had a summer program for kids that wanted to
incorporate some stranger danger and awareness. Dave Allen and Brice Cady
taught several sessions with voice control, situational drills and self
defense. MAAB judo student, Hannah Wambolt, just so happened to be a
participant in the summer program and graciously helped out Mr. Allen and
Mr. Cady.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
The MAAB Kids’ Demo Team, directed by Master Dru Wagner and Mr. Allen will
be performing at Montana Fair on August 21st. They will also gear up for
Saturday Live, a fund raiser for School District #2, on September 25th.
They have been practicing poomse and spectacular self defense moves.
